I know what your thinking. Why on earth would a person want to change a perfectly good shower area into a closet? Well let me tell you why. When you have a company that is pumping out prefab houses on the average of one per month or more, no one really questions the plans. In addition these houses are for people that are retired or retiring but they put three full bathrooms in a two bedroom home.
The people that own this home decided to convert this tub area into a closet and storage space. They wanted to use Cape Cod style wainscoting, they wanted two double doors, and a hatch door on the top. Mind you, the sizes of the doors could have been larger but this is what they wanted. To make things even more interesting they needed a downward hatch to store things in the actual tub. They also wanted to keep the tub in the same pristine condition that it was in, no dings, scratches, and no holes. Just in case they ever decided to move out.So we get a perfectly good tub to work with. We started by creating a template of the tub area which we used to mount everything to. From there we were able to fabricate the whole assembly shop side. Test fit everything. Then take it apart and bring it to the site for reassembly.
To start with the template went down onto the tub. Then hatch door panel with piano hinge was installed. From there it was a matter of getting all of the sub-assemblies installed into their respective dadoes with cleats to back them up. Then Cape Cod style Wainscoting went over everything with base molding and mini-crown molding. Below you can see photos of the closet just before the hatch was installed as well as a close-up of the adjustable shelving with the downward hatch for lower storage.
