This little box has a couple of features that I wanted to showcase. First is the fact that when you rip a piece of maple and turn it sideways you can see a lot of the little ray flakes. They catch the light and move around, I liked that.
The second was a piece of cedar that I had set aside during a cedar shake job we were doing, I think total on that house we installed 30 bundles. Out of those 30 bundles for some reason there was 1 shingle that stood out. It had a huge range of color, from black too almost a yellow-blond.
The third and final part was a knotty board that got discarded from another project. It was only about a 16″ long, which was about what I needed for the removable tray. It took me a while but I finally put two and two together and headed to the Wall Woodworks wood shop.
The tiny joinery on the box was fun to mill, all of it was done on the table saw. Most of it was about a blade thick, the cedar is frame and panel, dadoes on the tray with a few rabbits. It was a good break to make something small with some pieces of scrap that have been sitting in the shop for a while. An addition I got to make something I can use!
